چکیده

We address the concurrent rebalancing of almost balanced binary search trees (AVL trees). Such a rebalancing may for instance be necessary after successive insertions and deletions of keys. We show that this problem can be studied through the self-reorganization of distributed systems of nodes controlled by local evolution rules in the line of the approach of Dijkstra and Scholten. This yields a much simpler algorithm that the ones previously known. As a by-product, this solves in a very general setting an old question raised by H.T. Kung and P.L. Lehman: where should rotations take place to rebalance arbitrary search trees? Note: The full version of this paper can be found in BGMS97].

UML-based Approach to Specify Secured, Fine-grained Concurrent Access to Shared Resources

In object oriented paradigm, a concurrent system can be regarded as a collection of autonomous active objects which synchronize and communicate through shared passive objects. In this paper, we propose a UML-based approach to specify secured, fine-grained concurrent access to shared resources ensuring data integrity and security. The goal of the approach is to develop the UML specification with...

Concurrent Rebalancing on HyperRed-Black Trees

The HyperRed-Black trees are a relaxed version of RedBlack trees accepting high degree of concurrency. In the Red-Black trees consecutive red nodes are forbidden. This restriction has been withdrawn in the Chromatic trees. They have been introduced by O. Nurmi and E. Soisalon-Soininen to work in a concurrent environment. A Chromatic tree can have big clusters of red nodes surrounded by black no...

Finer-grained Locking in Concurrent Dynamic Planar Convex Hulls

The convex hull of a planar point set is the smallest convex polygon containing each point in the set. The dynamic convex hull problem concerns efficiently maintaining the convex hull of a set of points subject to additions and removals. One algorithm for this problem uses two external balanced binary search trees (BSTs) [16]. We present the first concurrent solution for this problem, which use...

Embedding Methods for Fine Grained Entity Type Classification

We propose a new approach to the task of fine grained entity type classifications based on label embeddings that allows for information sharing among related labels. Specifically, we learn an embedding for each label and each feature such that labels which frequently co-occur are close in the embedded space. We show that it outperforms state-of-the-art methods on two fine grained entity-classif...

Fine Grained Version Control of Configurations in COOP/Orm

This paper describes a unified approach to version control of documents and configurations. Hierarchical structure, which is present in most documents such as programs, is recognized and utilized in a fine-grained version control system. The same mechanism is used for version control of configurations and extended to handle DAGs as well as trees. Change propagation within one hierarchical docum...
